What Are Spiders?

Known for their eight legs and many eyes, spiders are pests that most people can quickly identify. Other physical features of a spider include two body sections, chewing mouthparts, and lack of antennae and wings. Additionally, all spiders produce silk, but not all build webs. They also all have venom, some with venom strong enough to cause health problems in people. Spiders are a year-round problem, and one that most homeowners have had to deal with at one time or another. In our area, the black widow and brown recluse are two species that people need to be wary around.

Are spiders dangerous?

Some spiders are dangerous, while others are more of a nuisance. Nuisance spiders typically don’t become an annoyance for people until they invade our homes. While they have venom, it is not strong enough to trigger health problems. Black widow spiders and brown recluse spiders are dangerous spiders and need to be kept out of yards and our homes. Their venom is potent and will cause health problems in the people they bite.

Why do I have a spider problem?

Spiders are predators, and feed on a variety of insects and other spiders. They help to control populations of nuisance insects in our yards and gardens. Therefore, it only fits that properties with a lot of vegetation and insect activity also have a lot of spider activity. While spiders do prefer the outdoors, when the outside doesn’t provide them with ample prey, they’ll move inside. Spider activity inside of your home may seem to increase in the fall when spiders follow overwintering insects indoors.

Where will I find spiders?

Where spiders decide to hang out often depends on whether they build webs or not. Web-building spiders build their webs both at ground level or above ground level. Burrowing spiders do not build webs and are usually only at ground level.

Most spiders prefer to stay out of the limelight and hide in quiet, dark areas. Inside, spiders live in crawlspaces, attics, wall voids, closets, under furniture, and underneath sinks. Outside, spiders hide within the landscaping in tall grass, woodpiles, between rocks, and garden areas.
